Interactive Notebooks
The 8th grade science team uses Interactive Notebooks to keep our students notes organized and in one place. The notebooks are set up to have teacher input (notes, vocab., factual information...) on the right side and student output (diagrams, stories, flowcharts, etc) on the left side. The set up of the notebook forces us to THINK about and PROCESS information as we write it down. For every page of information we put in the notebook we also have a page where we DO something to interpret the information. The idea is to help us internalize the information better, and not just have pages and pages of handwritten notes. Basically, everyone has the EXACT same information on the right side, while the left side is more specific to how the student completes the activity.
I love the way it forces me to think about my students learning and it forces my students to stay organized. Below is our current table of contents, I have it written on the board in my classroom, in MY interactive notebook and now here in hopes that students who are absent, loose notebooks, or fall behind can catch up.
If a student is missing any page in their notebook, I have some of the notes uploaded on my NOTES page here on the website, or they can check with a neighbor in class, or they can borrow my notebook during class.
